How to connect a reference with its citations
A reference-list entry should correspond to a work cited in the text. Mentur compares the available information, but small differences in author or year may make the connection unclear.
Find the work in the paper’s body. Confirm that the citation uses the same author and year as the reference. If you only consulted the source and it does not support any text, decide whether to cite it or remove it from the list according to the assignment’s purpose.

This entry appears in your reference list, but there is no in-text citation with the same author and year in the body of the paper. An in-text citation is the brief identification placed beside an idea, fact, or wording taken from a source; a reference gives the complete information needed to identify and locate that work. They are different elements that work together: adding a reference does not cite the passage where the source was used, and a work that was only consulted belongs in the list only when the assignment also requests a bibliography.
How to fix it
- 1In the report, open the observation titled “Reference is not cited in the text” and use its location or highlighted evidence to find the affected content.
- 2Cite the source where it is used or remove the entry if it is not part of the paper.
- 3Read the complete entry after the change. Confirm its punctuation and order, then check whether its author and date match the corresponding in-text citation when applicable.
