What the document viewer is for

The viewer brings your document and Mentur’s observations together on one screen. It helps you read an excerpt in context, recognize the type of issue being highlighted, and review the explanation before deciding what to change.

The viewer is a review tool: it does not edit the file you uploaded. Make corrections in the original Word document. After a round of changes, save the file and upload a new version if you want to compare the result.

How to open the viewer

You can enter it in two ways:

  1. Select Review document at the top of the report to begin a general review.
  2. Select Locate in document or View in document from an observation to open the viewer at the related content.

On larger screens, a floating button also lets you return to the document while browsing the report. When an observation does not have a precise enough location, the viewer may take you to an approximate page or show only the information available in the details panel.

If you first need to understand priorities and attention levels, read how to interpret a Mentur report.

How the screen is organized

On a computer, the viewer divides the review into three connected areas:

  • Left panel: choose the paragraph, element, or issue type you want to review.
  • Document: read the pages and see indicators connected with visible observations.
  • Right panel: understand the selected issue, its suggested correction, the related criterion, and its detected location.

Selecting an item in any area updates the other two. For example, choosing a paragraph in the left panel locates it in the document and displays its observations in the right panel.

Choose between paragraph and issue-type review

The Display mode selector provides two ways to work.

By paragraph

This mode groups observations by where they appear. Use it when you want to follow the document’s order and correct everything related to one paragraph, heading, table, or other element before moving on.

You can search for a paragraph or element by its text, filter by report type, and sort results by document order or by number of issue types. Opening an element gathers the observations affecting that content in the details panel.

By issue type

This mode groups observations by correction category. Use it for repeated changes, such as standardizing fonts, fixing indentation, or reviewing every citation with the same problem.

Choose a category first and then an occurrence. You can search within the category and use the previous and next controls to move through its cases without returning to the list.

A practical approach is to begin by issue type for repeated changes and finish by paragraph to confirm that each excerpt still makes sense in context.

Understand numbers, colors, and markers

Each issue type receives a number and color in the viewer. The legend above the document shows the category represented by each combination. The legend is a visual reference; it does not change or filter the results.

Select a marker to open the connected observation. When several observations are close together, Mentur may group them at one point; selecting that point lets you choose the case you want to review.

Markers show where to look, but always read the complete sentence, paragraph, or element. Some rules depend on context, and some locations can only be approximated to a page. An observation also does not mean you should change the text without first checking the criterion and your assignment requirements.

Read the details panel

The right panel changes with the current selection. It may include:

  • the issue name and attention level;
  • an explanation of what was found;
  • the recommended action;
  • the related APA criterion and, when available, a link to the standards guide;
  • the page, excerpt, or other information that helps locate the case;
  • controls for moving to another occurrence of the same issue or another observation in the element.

If the summary does not answer your question, open the expanded solution in the Mentur guide. The General format, Paper parts, References, and APA elements directories collect every available explanation.

The header lets you move to the previous or next page and review observations in order. Additional tools appear beside the document when the screen has enough room:

  • Move document: drag the view when zoom makes a page wider than the available area.
  • Zoom in or out: change the viewing size without changing the original file.
  • Search text: enter a word or phrase and move through matches found in the pages.
  • Show or hide indicators: temporarily clear the page so you can read without markers.
  • Full screen: expand the review area when the browser supports it.

Hiding indicators does not remove observations or change filters. You can show them again at any time.

Use the viewer on a phone

On a small screen, the document uses most of the space and details appear in a bottom panel. From there, you can:

  • move to the previous or next issue;
  • change pages;
  • zoom in or out;
  • show or hide markers;
  • expand the explanation and correction for the selected case.

Tap Current review to open or close the details. If you need to compare many categories or search the entire document, the computer view provides more controls at the same time.

Understand alternative viewer states

The viewer is still being prepared

Mentur displays a notice while it finishes preparing the document view. You do not need to reload the page; the content will appear automatically when it is ready.

A text reading appears

If the view with the file’s presentation is unavailable, Mentur may show a text reading so you can continue reviewing observations. This view helps identify excerpts and issues, but it should not be used to judge visual details such as margins, page placement, or exact appearance.

You can see only part of the observations

When a report has limited access, the viewer shows only the cases available at that access level and identifies the result as a partial view. The counter distinguishes visible observations from the total found.

You opened a shared report

The person sharing a report decides whether people with the link may also preview the document. A shared report can therefore be available even when its viewer is not.

  1. Open a priority observation from the report with Locate in document.
  2. Read the complete excerpt and confirm that the marker points to the content you expected.
  3. Review the explanation, recommendation, and criterion in the details panel.
  4. Make the correction in the original Word file, not in the viewer.
  5. Review the other occurrences of the same type so you can apply the change consistently.
  6. Switch to paragraph review and confirm that the result still makes sense within each section.
  7. Save the document and upload a new version when you want to review the changes again.

The viewer’s Help button opens a quick tour of its main areas. You can reopen it at any time; use this page as the complete reference when questions come up during review.
